She doesn’t wanna do it. She refused to eat her breakfast because breakfast is stupid. He can’t stand anyone in this house because everyone is stupid (and ugly.) And Covid is stupid. And school is stupid. And every stupid thing is stupid.
And I haven’t even started talking about your kids yet! The grown ups are worn out and rapidly descending into an adolescent-esque hell of resistance and snarkery. And who can blame us? We did NOT sign up for this. We did NOT agree to be our kids’ parent, playmate, housemate, short-order cook, and you-are-my-everything-24-7! And now we have to be the teacher?
Say it with me: “Paging Captain Stupid McStupidson!” Nope. Nope-to-the-nopiest-nope.
So let it go. Seriously. Not in a cheesy Disney theme song way. Seriously–consciously–release the pressure of being everything right now. Make the main thing the main thing. And despite what your 80 year old social studies teacher who wrote 40 questions on the chalkboard in her perfect penmanship and expected you to sit and copy them in equally perfect penmanship might say–RIGHT NOW–school is NOT the main thing. I’m a career educator, advocate, parent, trainer in education, and I said it. I’m not even scared. School is not the main thing.
The main thing is simple. It’s so simple. In fact it’s so ridiculously simple that our overthinking brains complicate it and put it out of our reach at times. So I’ll put it simply: BALANCE.
We are all feeling completely out of sorts right now because the sheer velocity of change that is swirling around us is knocking us completely out of balance. Put another way, we are “disregulated.” So, dear frazzled friends, if the grown ups in the house are disregulated, I assure you the little ones are, too. And since a disregulated brain quite literally is dis-functional, we need to talk about school and what’s realistic.
BUT FIRST: Make the conscious choice to seek balance, a.k.a. regulation, as an individual, as a couple (if appropriate), as a family, and even as a community. I’ll help with how. . .let’s continue this tomorrow!
